Thing Ten Path Finders

So time is running out for my students to do anymore library projects. Testing started at the HS. I only have 1 more class at the JR HS. One thing I use but I don’t put on the path finders I create is some kind of introduction to get the students attention.

Here are links to some of my favorite and most useful I have more but they are on my laptop but I thought these would be good to share:

Thing Ten Path Finders

I found a web site from NH about radio of the decades. Here is the link: http://rundlett.concord.nh.libguides.com/decades . It is about the music of the decades but it also is a source of information for what was happening in our world during those times. Some of it is a bit amusing but the is also some great resources for the 1930’s with timelines, New Deal Network, New York Times Topics, and  Library of Congress resources. It does take a while to sort thru some of the links but for certain projects like the 1920’s Time Magazine project I will use some of these resources on the music of the decade sites As I was looking for information on wars on the Concord site I did not find a lot of useful information for my 8th grade student’s war projects, but I will keep looking.

I was printing my path finders for my class projects today and saw that I have learned more each time as I printed them out to put in my folders. I learned that when doing one unit do not create new path finders for each topic. I now create new Internet groups with in the path finder to cover the topics as well as create a date for it. So OPALS is very easy to use and I have definitely progressed in creating pathfinders. I learned to include a works cited link on every project. I will continue looking at what other people have created, learn from their work, and incorporate it into some of my projects.

As an aside, I was actually learning how to use a NOOK today. Our school will start using them in September as long as the technology team comes to an understanding about how we can loan them and have students be responsible for them. I read on Deborah’s blog about how they are used at Columbia HS and used this as examples about other schools were using them.

Thing Ten Pathfinders

One thing that I found again was copyright friendly pictures. I had been having students use google images labeled for re-use. Now I can use some of the links I lost on this page http://copyrightfriendly.wikispaces.com/home . It will so much nicer to link some of these photo links into a pathfinder.

One disappointment is with some of the pathfinders sound great but are not functioning and don’t have all the info needed for my own work. But if I had lots of time (maybe this summer) I will find my top ten sites.

I am working on a NYS pathfinder now for a 7/8 grade class. I am trying to make this one really look cool and get them interested. I will let you all know how it goes.

Thing 10 Pathfinders

I have been creating pathfinder for some of my classes. Mine are a bit boring compared to some of the ones I found on this website http://pathfinderswap.wikispaces.com/. This site breaks the pathfinders into subject area and then breaks it down to grade levels. One I think is very useful is http://www.findingdulcinea.com/guides/Health.xa_1.html  It is a health pathfinder but also contains a lesson on web site evaluation. As I explore these sites I am finding great ideas that I can incorporate into my own pathfinders.

Thing 9 Audio Books

So I just wanted to finish this post on a positive note. My new mp3 player works great with  Over Drive. When turn off my mp3 player and then turn it back on it starts exactly where I left  off.  After talking to people about an e reader I have decided that eventually I will get one after I get a Jet Ski, being out on the water cruising on the lake takes priority over an e reader.
